Engineering Day 2026

We the engineers. Together. For the future.

THIS YEAR'S THEME

Engineering Intelligent Machines

Where AI enters the physical world

Engineers today face a new kind of problem: how to make intelligent machines function reliably in the messy, unpredictable physical world. AI is no longer confined to controlled environments. It is moving into robots, tools and autonomous systems that must operate safely, respond in real time and interact with people.

How do we make intelligent machines work in the real world, with real constraints and real consequences?

Engineering Day 2026 brings together engineers working at the center of this shift across robotics, mobility, energy, healthcare and infrastructure. Together we explore what applied machine intelligence means in practice and what this transformation means for the future of engineering.

MASTERCLASSES

Focused sessions. Deeper technical insight.

Masterclasses are focused, small-group sessions designed to give engineers deeper insight into real technical challenges.

Before the main Engineering Day programme begins, participants can join one of four expert-led masterclasses exploring engineering topics in greater depth.

Each masterclass lasts 45 minutes and is limited in size to ensure an engaging and practical learning environment.

PROGRAMME

A day designed with clarity, rhythm and depth.

The programme moves between focused talks, conversations and shared moments throughout the day, building from technical depth towards broader discussion, recognition and celebration.

Programme and speakers may be subject to change.

13:25

HERO TALK: AI IN CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE

How can AI help build smarter, safer and more resilient infrastructure? Trafikverket shares perspectives on how intelligent systems and data-driven decision-making are shaping the future of transport and critical infrastructure.

13:40

HERO TALK: APPLIED AI IN INDUSTRIAL OPERATIONS

How can AI create value in large-scale industrial operations? This talk explores how data, analytics and machine learning are being used to improve efficiency, optimise processes and support decision-making in complex production environments.

13:55

NETWORKING BREAK

Coffee, snacks and networking.

14:25

FIRESIDE CHAT: BUILDING TRUST IN INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS

As intelligent systems become part of critical products, services and infrastructure, trust becomes a key engineering challenge. What does it take to build systems that people can rely on?

14:40

HERO TALK: ENGINEERING IN THE AGE OF AI

How is AI changing the way engineers work, collaborate and solve complex problems? As new tools become part of everyday engineering, the profession itself is evolving.

14:55

FIRESIDE CHAT: HUMAN IN THE LOOP

As AI systems become more capable, the role of human judgement becomes increasingly important. Where should decisions be automated, and where should people remain in control?

15:10

HERO TALK: SYSTEMS THINKING AT SCALE

From fighter aircraft to advanced defence systems, some engineering challenges can only be solved by understanding how thousands of components interact within a larger whole.

15:25

NETWORKING BREAK

Coffee, snacks and networking.

15:55

PANEL: THE AI ENGINEER

How is engineering changing in the age of intelligent machines? As AI becomes part of products, infrastructure and industrial systems, new skills, roles and ways of working are emerging.

16:15

HERO TALK: BUILDING WITH INTELLIGENCE

From planning and design to construction and operations, AI is creating new opportunities across the built environment. How can intelligent technologies help deliver smarter, safer and more sustainable projects?

16:30

FIRESIDE CHAT: THE AI ECONOMY

AI is expected to transform industries, business models and the way work is organised across society. As intelligent systems become part of everyday operations, new opportunities emerge alongside new challenges for organisations, individuals and policymakers.
