Why?
The climate crisis is one of humanity’s greatest challenges, and we have a responsibility to future generations to contribute to solutions and reduce our own climate impact.
We aspire to take powerful action in the climate transition, and that is why Skanska Sweden has committed to the goal of climate neutrality by 2045 throughout our value chain. This is an important part of our promise to build a better society. The transition needs to happen rapidly, and this year, the Grand Prize for Engineering in Sustainability will focus on environmental and climate issues.
Who?
The winner of the Grand Prize for Engineering in Sustainability can be an individual engineer or a small team with a majority of engineering competence. Individuals who are passionate about the climate issue, innovative, and want to change the world we live in in a sustainable way.
Nominate individuals (or yourself) who have identified a climate challenge, small or large, and then developed a product, service, or innovation. The result has had a positive, sustainable, and direct impact on our climate. This could involve, for example:
- A new product
- A new way of working
- A new type of service
Base criteria:
- Swedish Connection: The solution or individual should have a strong connection to Sweden, through residence, development, or otherwise.
- Societal Benefit: The work should positively impact society or the environment.
- Ethics and Sustainability: The solution should adhere to high ethical standards and promote sustainability.
- Current Development: The nominee must have worked on the project in the last year.
- Nominees may not be employed by the prize category partner (Skanska).
The nominations for 2024 are now closed.

Motivation by the jury:
Tackling the climate crisis requires win-win solutions, for example new business models that can enable parties with previously conflicting interests to benefit from working toward the same goals. This years’ winners have demonstrated in an ingenious way how an old business model can be transformed, providing a key for incentivising multi-party transition.
The team behind this solution have shown with both engineering expertise and ingenuity that by thinking innovatively and challenging old truths, far-reaching results can be achieved.

Motivation by the jury:
The climate challenge is the biggest challenge of our time. We must find new solutions, but also reduce our climate impact here and now. This year’s winner does both – her innovation can globally reduce emissions that have not been sufficiently highlighted so far.
When companies get accurate knowledge of the climate impact from their cloud services, they can use data-driven decisions to reduce emissions. With the increasing digitization, this becomes increasingly important, both in Sweden and globally.

Northvolt through Maria Åstrand
Motivation by the jury:
The Sustainability prize goes to a candidate who is revolutionizing Swedish industry. As a green force where sustainability work is integrated at every level, the winner is at the forefront of what engineering can bring about in the form of rapid changes. It is made clear that production can successfully move from linear and imported to circular and domestic. Through courage and great drive, the recipient shows how the re-industrialization of Norrland can focus on climate neutrality and circularity and puts the young engineer’s influence at the center.
The recipient of the award runs an initiative to ensure a green value chain for battery metals, with good transparency, ethics and long-term perspective.
